University of Nigeria (UNN) Direct Entry 2010/ 2011 Screening Exercise

UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA 2010/2011 SCREENING AND INTERVIEW FOR DIRECT ENTRY ADMISSION

Candidates for Direct Entry Admission into the University of Nigeria, Nsukka who have registered with Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and have a Degree or at least a Merit/Lower credit level pass in Diploma or NCE are invited for screening and interview.
1. SCREENING EXERCISE
The screening will be conducted at the Nsukka campus of the University on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at 8.30am.
ON-LINE PRE-REGISTRATION
a) Eligible candidate should pay a processing fee of one thousand Naira (N1,000.00) and obtain a scratch card for on-line pre-registration at any branch of
- First Bank of Nigeria Plc,
- Diamond Bank Plc, in the major cities of the Federation, and the University of Nigeria Micro-Finance Banks at Enugu and Nsukka.
b) On-line Pre-registration commences on Monday, August 16, 2010 and ends on Monday, August 30, 2010. Those who fail to register within this period will not be screened.
With the scratch card, candidate should access and complete the University of Nigeria
2010/2011 Direct Entry screening form on-line at www.unnportal.com .
c) All candidates are required to bring the following for the screening exercise:
i) A copy of ON-LINE form carrying the candidate’s passport-sized photograph and duly completed;
ii) 2010/2011 Direct Entry JAMB Registration slip;
iii) HB pencil and Eraser.
No GSM handsets, calculators or any other extraneous materials should be brought into the screening hall.
Information on the halls for the screening will be made available on the University of Nigeria website, www.unn.edu.ng, a day to the screening date.
VISUALLY IMPAIRED CANDIDATES
Blind candidates are not invited to the screening, but they should register on-line.
SCREENING RESULT
The result of the screening exercise can be accessed at the University of Nigeria Portal www.unnportal.com from September 10, 2010 with the designated scratch card.

YABATECH extends post-UTME deadline

THE management of the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has extended the deadline of registration for its post-UTME screening from August 13 to 22.

A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the institution, Mr Adekunle Adams announced the extension and directed candidates, who chose the college as first and second choice and scored 180 and above to proceed with the online registration.

He explained that the extension became neccessary to accommodate the high number of candidates that applied to the college.

He also said that candidates who have commenced registration and are not able to complete it by the deadline would be allowed at the examination centre with their receipt of payment, pin number and JAMB print out containing their uploaded photograph and result.

UNN VC woos best graduands to embrace academics  

 

OUTSTANDING students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), who excelled by winning faculty and departmental prizes, received a call Friday last week to return to the university to pursue their higher degrees and a career in academics.The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Bartho Okolo, gave the charge in an address to the 2008/2009 graduating class at the 39th Convocation of the university.

He said: "Just last night, we shared the joys of those who excelled as winners of departmental and faculty prizes for outstanding scholarship. Permit me to suggest that such outstanding performers should consider returning to the university to take advantage of the positive teaching and learning environment which we are creating for scholarship and research. You will find fulfillment as academics and contribute to new knowledge."

Okolo told the students that they were "heirs to a proud and successful legacy, the legacy of innovation, of outstanding achievements and path breaking tradition" and had within them the potential to define the future.

He noted that education is what has always allowed humanity to meet the challenges of a changing world; a fact that has never been truer than it is today. He pointed out that the students are graduating at a time of great difficulty for Nigeria and the world.

Okolo urged the Class of 2010 to write the next great chapter in Nigeria’s story; to meet the tests of their time; and to take up the ongoing work of fulfilling the founding promise.

"Opportunity and luck come to the prepared," Okolo stated, stressing: "You have received sound preparation here, within the limits of existing resources, and I have faith in your ability to represent this great institution and our country wherever you find yourselves in this global arena. Go forth and make your marks".

Six thousand, seven hundred graduands received degrees and certificates at the two-day event. Of this number, 1,469 graduands were conferred with higher degrees, the highest number of such at any given time. The higher degrees included 167 doctorates, 1,067 with masters and 235 postgraduate diplomas while 56 out of the 5,062 first-degree recipients, graduated with first class honours.

Two governors, Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State and Mohammed Danjuma Goje were also conferred with honorary degrees of the university.

Meanwhile, the university is to launch general and special endowments to provide funding for capital projects in pursuit of its vision to meet global standards.

Okolo said UNN planned to reduce drastically its dependence on government subvention by leaning on its alumni, institutional donors and other stakeholders to raise the funds necessary to implement its transformation programme.

According to the Vice Chancellor, "We require fresh approaches to resource mobilisation and management, to fulfil the size and scope of our vision for the University of Nigeria of this era. The University of Nigeria therefore seeks endowments from corporate or institutional donors as well as our able alumni and friends to fund various aspects of our operations going forward. Our goal is to gradually reduce dependence on subvention, which despite the best efforts of the government is often not enough, and generate independently the resources necessary to match our vision."

YABATECH, others to wait for varsity status 

 The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) and five others pencilled down for upgrade into degree-awarding institutions will have to wait, it was learnt.

Education Minister Prof Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i spoke at YABATECH yesterday during the distribution of science kits to junior secondary schools.

She said the modalities for the upgrade are being worked out, adding that a committee has been set up to resolve issues that would arise.

According to her, some of these issues include converting the qualification of the National and Higher National Diploma to Bachelor of Technology (B.TECH), reconciling the profiles of academic staff and upgrading the curriculum.

She said with these resolved, the matter would be tabled before the Federal Executive Council (FEC) for approval.

The other institutions are Federal College of Education, Kano; Federal College of Education, Zaria; Avan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri; Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo, and Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna.

Prof Rufa’i said for now the upgrade is a mere recommendation of the Implementation Committee on Guidelines for Degree Awarding for Colleges of Education and Polytechnics which submitted its report on July 20.

"We set up a committee to look into the upgrade of some institutions and they recommended the conversion of the six institutions and we accepted the recommendation.

‘’But we have to work through the modalities of the conversation and many stages are involved in the transformation. After that, we will present it before the Federal Executive Council for approval.

‘’It is when we get approval from the FEC that these institutions will now become degree-awarding institutions," she said.

She said the government is upgrading the institutions to expand access to university education.

The minister said efforts to ensure 10 million out-of-school children are enrolled at the basic education level are yielding results.

Seventy science kits were distributed to 10 junior secondary schools in Lagos at the event.

The Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), Dr Ahmed Modibbo Mohammed, said 35 states would get 70 kits each while the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) would receive 28.

He said the kits cost N711 million, adding that the money was from the balance of the accrued funds of the Home Grown School Feeding and Health Programme (HGSF&H).

The kits were designed and produced by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).

He urged the schools to take good care of the kits.

Lagos State Deputy Governor Princess Sarah Adebisi Sosan praised UBEC and assured that the state would continue to invest in Technical and Vocational Education (TVE).

The Minister of Science and Technology, Prof Mohammed Kaoje Abubakar, who accompanied Prof Rufa’i for the launch, pledged his ministry’s support to development of science education.

If you ever have the privilege to visit Konkkuk University in Korea what else would you have loved to see? Or who will you like to meet. Well, maybe you should not think too hard because there is someone you should meet. She is Alia Subair, the world youngest professor
. She is 19.
Perhaps in Alia Sabur's wildly advanced studies she came across a famous quote from a German writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which says "Knowing is not enough. We must apply."That could serve as explanation for what prompted the 19-year-old to become the youngest college professor in history.
Sabur, from Northport, N.Y., has clearly been ahead of the learning curve since an early age. Report had it that she started talking and reading when she was just 8 months old. She had elementary school finished at age 5. She made the jump to college at age 10. And by age 14, Sabur was earning a bachelor's of science degree in applied mathematics from Stony Brook University - the youngest female in U.S. history to do so. Her education continued at Drexel University, where she earned an M.S. and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering.
With an unlimited future ahead of her, Sabur directed her first career choice to teaching. She was three days short of her 19th birthday in February when she was hired to become a professor at Konkuk University in Seoul, Korea. In traditional Korean culture, children are considered to be 1 year old when they are born, and add a year to their age every New Year instead of their actual birthday, so in Korea Sabur is considered 20.This distinction made her the youngest college professor in history, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, beating the previous record held by Colin Maclaurin- the student of physicist Isaac Newton in 1717.
Sabur said she is merely gravitating toward putting what she has learned to good use. At Konkuk University, She said she will take part in classroom instruction, but will also focus on research into developing nanotubes for use as cellular probes that could aid cures for diseases.
On top of her unprecedented academic achievements, Sabur has a black belt in the Korean martial art of tae kwon do and is also a music prodigy. She has been playing clarinet with orchestras since her solo debut at age 11, playing with recording artists Lang Lang and Smash Mouth. So is there anything Sabur can't do? Well, I won't be surprised if you say nothing but I'm sorry to disappoint you, she struggles with basketball and with long writing. In fact, sometimes she forgets just how special she really is.
An amazing teenager you would say, however the big question is if we can look forward to having this kind of achievement in Africa? Well the likes of Reuben Abati of Guardian newspaper who had his Ph.D at 26 are indications that we are closer to the Olympia height if we are able to change our education sector for better. Where long strike of lecturers will move the government and public office holders will bring their children from other land to learn side by side with an average Nigerian child in those classrooms provided by our governments for our public schools. It will really be a dream come true.

Achievers University Students Remembers the Mothersless

It was fun filled week as Achievers University Students’ Association (AUSA), recently concluded her Student week. The event which started on Monday 12th July 2010 came to a successful conclusion on the 18th. The first day of the week involved the association executives and some representatives of the student fold travelling to the capital city Akure, paying a visit to Ondo State Radiovision Corporation (OSRC) before proceeding to the Motherless Babies home in the capital, where the association commended the effort made by the government and the coordinators of the home in saving the lives of abandoned babies, the
association also gave out food stuffs and toiletries to the motherless babies home. Tuesday was characterised by an inter-secondary school quiz competition consisting of eleven invited schools from within Owo local government area, five schools turned up for the event with Owo Diocesan Anglican Grammar School, Ipele-Owo coming first in the competition.

Wednesday was time to talk on health as specialist doctors were invited from the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owo to talk on ‘Managing Ulcer, Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID), Typhoid and Cancer.  The school’s chapel drama unit were also on ground to display an educative drama on health. Thursday involved the display of various traditional attires by the students, ranging from Yoruba, Igbo and Hausa attires. Later in the evening, there was an award night characterized by awarding students who were the best academically, not neglecting students who performed well socially. Friday was an historic day for the Man O’War members who were officially inaugurated alongside the Zero Tolerance for Corruption Club (ZTC) and later carried out a camp fire which lasted all through the night. The last day of the event was termed as the most interesting day of the event by most students; it involved a 90minutes journey to the Erin-Ijesha waterfall in Osun state where the students had fun. Sunday was a time to say thank you to God for making the week a successful one. The chapel coordinator, Mr. Taiwo Adenegan while commending the President, Arodudu Morounfoluwa, said the week was one of its kind and an historic
event since the inception of the institution.

Nigeria: As the New Universities Arrive

Lagos — The Federal Government's recent decision to convert six non-degree tertiary institutions into specialized universities is good news. The institutions include the Federal College of Education, Kano; Federal College of Education, Zaria; Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri; and Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. They are now to be known as universities of education. Others are the Yaba College of Technology, Yaba, Lagos, and Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna, now designated as universities of technology.

According to the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufa'i, certain formalities will have to be fulfilled, however, before the institutions can commence full activities under their new status. She said, while receiving the report of an implementation committee set up by the government for the purpose, that the FG's white paper on the matter would soon be released for formal consideration by the Federal Executive Council. After the necessary approvals have been given, the way will be open for the new universities to kick off their activities.

We welcome the decision to upgrade the six schools and also the deliberate process of their selection and preparation for their new roles. The move indicates the government's responsiveness to the intense yearning of the public for an expanded access to university education in the country. As Prof. Rufa'i herself explained, the government recognises that the present situation, whereby less than 15 percent of candidates seeking university admission are successful in any given year, is unacceptable. It is expected that the specialized universities of education and technology that are soon to come on stream will help to open the admission doors to several thousand candidates. The implications of the present constricted admission opportunities are far-reaching. Every year, hundreds of thousands of candidates, many of them qualified and with good scores in the matriculation examination, are rejected by the universities. At an average of about one million candidates each year, and given an admission rate of about 15 percent (to quote the minister), this translates to about 850,000 candidates to whom the university gates are shut annually. The spillover of this pool of applicants each year intensifies the level of desperation among the frustrated candidates, worsening incidents of malpractice in the examinations. Many applicants have finally given up, after countless unsuccessful attempts at gaining admission.

Needless to say, the consequences of breeding year after year large numbers of frustrated young persons, who are aspiring intellectuals and professionals, could be dire to the society. The acute security challenges the country currently faces, especially the disturbing crime statistics involving the youth, are partly traceable to the frustrating admission process in the universities.

In this light, it is heartening that the Education Minister also mentioned the FG's commitment to strengthening the capacity of the National Open University of Nigeria to grant more access to tertiary education to the public, through the distance-learning channel. There is need, however, to keep a firm rein on quality control while expanding admission opportunities in the university system. The choice of some of the oldest and best established colleges of education and polytechnics in the country for the take-off of the new policy on converting such institutions to universities speaks well of the government's awareness of the quality issues. More transparency is required, however, in this regard. The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, who chairs the implementation committee handling the conversion process, told the minister, while presenting the committee's report, that the six institutions had met the stipulated guidelines. The public deserves to know what these guidelines are, and how each of the institutions scored on them.

Do the selected institutions have the required staff and equipment to handle teaching and research at degree level right away, or are there any deficits in some key areas that need to be addressed? Will they be autonomous from the start or initially be affiliated to some older universities? How will they combine their existing courses with the new ones without spreading teaching and administrative resources too thin? Will their present physical infrastructure cope with the new responsibilities? What about additional funding for these specialized universities? Can existing budget provisions accommodate their take-off cash needs? Details such as these should be worked out, clarified and the public properly enlightened.

We regard the upgrading of these institutions as the first phase of a continuing process, in the effort to ensure that intellectual capital development is liberalized, accelerated and intensified in the country. The ideal goal should be to create conditions that will enable every qualified Nigerian to develop his or her potential to the fullest, so as to contribute maximally to the country's development into an advanced economy in a democratic setting. To achieve this, Nigeria needs, for a start, hundreds of quality institutions offering world-class tertiary training to its citizens and foreign students. A carefully nurtured education sector, apart from providing the critical manpower for a knowledge-driven modern economy, can also attract substantial foreign exchange earnings into the country. The government, through the NUC, should encourage more tertiary institutions to qualify for conversion to degree-awarding status, with an uncompromising emphasis on high standards. We urge the NUC, however, to ensure that such institutions, including the new universities of education and universities of technology, are kept within the strict limits of their areas of core competence.

NUC revokes Ondo Varsity’s licence

The National Universities Commission (NUC) yesterday revoked the operational licence of the Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUTECH), Okitipupa.

The commission said it was concerned that the institution "has not commenced academic activities since it was formally recognised" in 2008.

The regulatory agency also issued a warning to the University of Education, Ikere-Ekiti, Ekiti State, to commence academic activities before August 15 or have its operational licence revoked.

NUC alleged that the institution submitted fictitious evidence to get approval.

The governors of both states have been contaccted, it was learnt yesterday

In a August 3 letter addressed to the Visitor to Ondo State University of Science and Technology (OSUTECH), Governor Olusegun Mimiko, with reference number NUC/ES/156/Vol. 1/37 and signed by the NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Julius Okojie, the Commission was concerned that OSUTECH has not commenced academic activities since it was formally recognised by the Commission in 2008.

What was supposed to be the end of a successful Students’ Union Week of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, turned bloody following the killing of a student by yet-to-be-identified policemen.

Prior to last week Friday, students of the polytechnic in Estako West Local Government Area of Edo State, especially those in their first year, looked forward to an eventful Rag Day which marks the end of the annual Students Union Week of every tertiary institution in Nigeria.

The Federal Polytechnic, Auchi 2010 Students’ Week was a successful event as Governor Adams Oshiomhole attended the Third National Business Conference of the School of Business of the polytechnic.

What began well ended on a sour note as the host town and neigbouring villages had a dose of students’ anger following the killing of a student identified as Akpos, an ND1 in the Department of Estate Management by unknown gunmen, who the students alleged were policemen.

The students, who learnt about the death of Akpos at about 5am that unfortunate Friday, in the hands of policemen quickly mobilised, took the body and headed for the police station where a full detachment of policemen were waiting.

The policemen were said to have resisted the pressure from the students which irked them and they went on rampage, looting and destroying properties worth millions of naira at federal establishments, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) unit office and the Federal Inland Revenue Service office in Auchi.

Not spared were private business centres within the vicinity of the federal establishments, where properties, including computers, and accessories, handsets and accessories, recharge cards and other valuables, were carted away by the irate students.

Vehicular traffic on the Benin-Abuja road was paralysed for over nine hours as the students turned out in large numbers and barricaded the road, preventing movement.

Several vehicles were looted in the riot that was apparently hijacked by miscreants who emptied a truck loaded with alcoholic drinks.

One of the students said they vented their anger on federal institutions because the police are also a federal agency.

At the FRSC unit office, two operational vehicles of the corps, a Premeira Nissan car belonging to a member of staff, and over 11 others parked within the premises were burnt beyond recognition.

The Magistrate Court hall in the FRSC premises and 14 offices were destroyed just as the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) office which is opposite the FRSC was vandalised by the students. Members of FRSC staff, who had escaped unhurt, were seen discussing their losses in hushed tones.

One of them said he had to scale the fence to save his head as the irate mob headed for the unit office while two female staff who had done night shift, said they hid inside the toilet till the students went away.

The Unit Commander of FRSC, Auchi, Olu Afolabi, said he was shocked at the incident, wondering why the students should avenge the death of their colleague on the corps.

He said the FRSC had a cordial relationship with the polytechnic and the students.

A business centre operator in the area, Patricia Odion Asuegbe, told The Nation that properties, including handsets and their accessories, recharge cards valued at over N5 million and about N82,000 were removed from her shop.

Also, some students were seen carrying goats and chickens.

The students, however, spared the NNPC mega filling station where they said kerosene was bought at a cheap rate of N50.

But for the timely intervention of the Otaru of Auchi, the Auchi Area Command Police Station would have been razed. The students had charged towards the police station to replicate the same action but they were placated by the monarch who stood between the students and the police station to appeal to them.

The Otaru told the students that burning the police station will not bring back their dead colleague.

It was also gathered that the students destroyed the office of the Dean, Students Affairs.

The Rector of the institution, Dr Phillipa Idogho, who visited the hostel complex to placate the irate students, was chased away.

The reason that led to the killing of Akpos, is quite unclear. A version had it that Akpos was shot by a mobile police escort attached to a South Eastern-Abuja bound luxury bus at the polytechnic gate which is on the Benin-Auchi Express way.

The late Akpos was said to have been with two others at about 2:20am, apparently waiting to board a vehicle to an unknown destination where they were to perform the Rag Day when the luxury bus was flagged down. It was at the point of entering the bus that the police escort was said to have fired three shots hitting Akpos on the head, neck and chest killing him instantly.

Sources said it was his two friends that ran to the hostel to narrate the unfortunate incident and led their peers to where Akpos was lying in a pool of his blood.

On the other hand, the polytechnic’s Students’ Union Government President, Asor Matthew, told Oshiomhole when the governor came to pacify the rioting students that Akpos was killed by men in a tinted police van.

He said the late Akpos was in company of his sister when the killing took place and that both Akpos and the sister were travelling to partake in the Rag Day.

He said they were dressed in tattered clothes in preparation for the 2010 Rag Day.

According to him, "We heard the gunshot. When we got to the hostel, they told us that policemen were shooting. We were later told that somebody was crying for help and before we got there, we found him lying dead. We went to the school management who gave us an ambulance."

"The ambulance could not carry the body so we took it to deposit it at the mortuary but police mounted road block on Jattu Road which was our route. We were going on a peaceful protest but the police prevented us. We have evidence that it was a police bullet that killed Akpos."

The union leader told Oshiomhole that the police fired life bullets at the protesting students which resulted to many sustaining injuries.

"Some of us are in the hospital. Some are in the police cell," he said.

Oshiomhole told the students that he visited them because he did not want to hear from any party that he was not present at the scene of incident.

"As you can see, I came here not wearing bullet proof vest. The security situation in the country is already sufficiently embarrassing. It is the responsibility of any government to protect lives and properties. My government cannot sit and receive reports from people who may not have full report of the incident.

"From your narration, whoever shot that bullet has the intention of killing your colleague. No life should be lost unnecessarily. Whoever takes any life must account for it. We will get whoever carried out the killing whether it was the police or civilian. The police have a duty to produce murderers".

Oshiomhole assured the students who barricaded the express way that he would direct the Commissioner of Police to begin immediate investigation, and that the state government would pay the bills of those hospitalised.

Appealing to the students to have trust in his promises, he urged them to demonstrate a level of maturity by vacating the highway as whatever they do will not bring the late Akpos back.

True to his words, Oshiomhole secured the release of those arrested.

The Public Relations Officer of the polytechnic, Mr Mustapha Oshiobugie, said the students took to the highway to protest the demise of their colleague and expressed sympathy on behalf of the school’s management to the bereaved family and the Students’ Union Government over the incident.
